Your body is a temple…or so the old saying goes. And although these words go back to biblical times, it still applies to life today. Studies have gone to great lengths to show the effects food has on the body—from its addictive qualities, think sugar and other hyper-palatable goodies, to its medicinal properties, like turmeric and ginger for example. Would you believe it if we told you the way to a healthier mind and body is right in your own refrigerator? We’ve compiled three of the best types of foods that have been shown to have positive health benefits for your mental and physical well-being.

1. Omega 3-fatty Acids. Think oily fish like sardines, salmon, and mackerel. But don’t let the smell of fish put you off. These types of foods are high in omega 3-fatty acids, which have been shown to have positive effects on brain functioning. Verywellmind.com notes that deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids can be linked to mental health problems. Try incorporating wild-caught salmon, walnuts, and flax and chia seeds into your week for some much-needed omega-3s.

2. Leafy green vegetables. Remember when your mother warned you to eat your veggies…well, Mom was onto something. Leafy greens, like spinach, contain the B vitamin folate. You’re going to want to make folate your friend! Studies have shown that low folate levels in the body have been associated with depression. Spinach, avocado, broccoli, and lentils are all great sources of folate.

3. Vitamin D. This sunshine vitamin is known to have a positive effect on mood! Studies have shown that vitamin D may increase levels of serotonin in your brain, one of the neurotransmitters responsible for mood. Egg yolks, sardines, and salmon are a great place to start when looking to up your vitamin D intake.
